Hell in Germany may not be what you expect

As part of acclimatizing to the German way of life I have been doing my part by painstakingly sampling new beers at every opportunity. It’s hard work but someone has to do it.

While looking for new research material in kaufland I came across a Landskron – Hell. At the same time I also spotted an Extra Hell from another brewer. Applying logic I reasoned that one should start with hell before working your way up (or down) to extra hell.

After opening it up this evening I happened to ask Sylvia if hell had a special meaning in German. Indeed it did! She said “hell means light”.

So let this be a lesson to other unsuspecting beer enthusiasts. Hell in Germany may not be what you were expecting, although I would hazard a guess that’s what beelzebub would serve in his bar.
